Outline

This course is designed for those who are new to the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for child protection and have completed stage one safeguarding children training for school staff. The course explores the role and the responsibilities of the DSL. This course is for all schools in the Hertfordshire area.

Prerequisites

Delegates must have completed stage one safeguarding children training for school staff. Ideally delegates should also have completed Families First Assessment/Early Help Module training. This course is for all schools in the Hertfordshire area.

Outcomes:

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • define the concept of significant harm and demonstrate an understanding of children’s needs
  • summarise national and local safeguarding children frameworks and identify school's safeguarding duties and responsibilities
  • identify learning from serious case reviews and the impact on safeguarding practice
  • explain organisational safeguarding responsibilities and the DSLs' individual casework responsibilities
  • demonstrate an understanding of effective safeguarding arrangements in school

Outcomes

By attending the course, participants will:

  • have an understanding of updates relating to local/national policies, procedures and legislation
  • have a recap of tasks relating to the DSL role
  • have knowledge of lessons learnt from safeguarding practice reviews
  • have an awareness of supplementary guidance relating to specific safeguarding issues
