Child protection: annual safeguarding update for staff

Last updated on 23 August 2023

The CPSLO Service Annual Safeguarding Update for academic year 2023-2024 is now ready to be downloaded from this page. To request the password in order to access this please email cpsloadmin@hertfordshire.gov.uk

The pack has been updated this year to be an interactive PowerPoint to refresh delegates knowledge of What school and college staff should know and do to fulfil their professional duty to safeguard and Promote the Welfare of Children in accordance with, Part one, Annex B of Keeping Children Safe in Education DfE 2023.

This does not replace formal three yearly statutory training. It is available to those schools who have purchased whole school Safeguarding Children Training from the CPSLO service in the last 3 years or have a session booked in the future.

The DfE's Keeping Children Safe in Education (2023) stipulates that all staff should receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection training which is regularly updated (every 3 years in Hertfordshire). In addition, all staff should receive safeguarding and child protection updates (for example, via email, e-bulletins and staff meetings), as required, and at least annually, to provide them with relevant skills and knowledge to safeguard children effectively.

The annual update package covers the bare minimum that staff must know as per Part One of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). It should not replace staff reading Part One, Annex B and C of KCSIE and the setting’s child protection policy.

To compliment the use of this interactive PowerPoint, the CPSLO service have developed a CPD schedule/timetable, intended to give the DSL some suggestions as to how specific safeguarding issues could be covered over the course of the academic year. This will allow a drip-drip effect and ensure that safeguarding is fully embedded into the ethos and culture of the education setting and that staff are regularly updating their knowledge and understanding around safeguarding topics in addition to formal training. Please note that this is not mandatory but would signify good practice as part of staff professional development (available end of September 2023).

Please note - the expectation is that the package is for the sole purpose of use in your school/college and should not be shared with others.
