Biting back to reduce tooth decay in under 5s

Last updated on 19 November 2024

Is your setting helping to keep those little smiles bright and healthy?

Hertfordshire Family Centre Services and Hertfordshire Public Health are teaming up to boost the oral health of vulnerable under 5s, and Early Years settings play a crucial role. The Hertfordshire Healthy Mouths programme is here to help families understand the importance of preventing tooth decay, improving oral hygiene, and promoting healthy eating habits.

Oral health packs (including a toothbrush, toothpaste, timer, and an oral health leaflet) are being given to vulnerable families with children under 5 through Health Visitors and key Family Centre networks. Plus, there are versions of the Oral Health leaflet in Dari/Pashto Afghan; Romanian; Urdu; Twi; Turkish; Polish and Ukrainian.

Email dee.debruin1@hertfordshire.gov.uk for an electronic version or contact your local family centre about the packs. In collaboration with Hertfordshire Libraries, there’s also a ‘My First Tooth’ certificate as part of the Libraries’ ‘My First’ scheme. And don’t forget, you can borrow the popular book “Let’s Brush Our Teeth” from your local library for your EYFS lessons on oral health.

Let’s work together to keep those tiny teeth sparkling!
