Exciting opportunity for schools to champion biodiversity

As shared in recent Schools Sustainability Leads Network meetings, Hertfordshire County Council is completing a brand-new guide designed to help schools bring nature to life on their playgrounds and green spaces.

This guide already features fantastic case studies from St. Luke’s School in Redbourn and Icknield Infants in Stevenage—showcasing woodland and hedgerow planting, and wildflower meadow creation. Now, we want to spotlight even more schools by looking for enthusiastic participants to help showcase the following Positive Actions for Nature:

  • Shallow water feature (3x2m lined pond)
  • Hedge planting
  • Small-scale tree planting
  • Rain gardens
  • Raised planters

Why get involved? The county council will provide the capital and materials for one case study of each of the positive actions listed above—your school just needs to commit to maintaining the intervention to ensure its long-term impact on local biodiversity.

Whether your school has acres of green space or just a small courtyard, we encourage you to apply! We’ll match a positive action to the most suitable school site, and let you know ify our school has been successfully chosen to participate in this project.

Send us your Expression of Interest (EOI) with the subject line: “EOI – Positive Actions for Biodiversity” Include your name, school name, and a dedicated point of contact, and email us at: sustainable@hertfordshire.gov.uk and we will be in touch with next steps.
