Free one-day workshop for secondary school pupils - 8th July 2026
The University of Hertfordshire, with Hertfordshire County Council, invite Hertfordshire Secondary Schools to express an interest in attending a free, one-day workshop on 8th July to explore how unhealthy food and drink advertising influences choices, health and wellbeing.
Through interactive talks, games and creative activities, pupils will develop critical thinking and media literacy skills, supporting learning in PSHE, Citizenship, Media Studies, Science and Art & Design. With guidance from the national youth-led organisation BiteBack and co-designed by the Hertfordshire Young People’s Research Advisory Group, pupils will learn how to critically evaluate food and drink advertising using a systems-thinking approach. They will then apply this learning creatively by designing eye-catching posters, to be displayed in local bus stop shelters.
A live illustrator will visually capture pupils’ key ideas and messages throughout the day, and students will have the opportunity to directly feedback their views and a summary of the workshop to Hertfordshire County Council Public Health and the Whole Systems Healthy Weight Board. This will allow them to see how their voices contribute to real-world policy and strategy.
This workshop offers pupils a high-impact, memorable learning experience that builds confidence, creativity and critical awareness, whilst allowing pupils to make a genuine difference in their local area.
Travel costs to the workshop can be covered and lunch will be provided, including for teaching staff attending. There are only limited places so to get your school involved, or for further information, please contact L.Denyer2@herts.ac.uk.
If you are interested but your school cannot make the 8th July workshop please still get in touch.
