How can Hertfordshire schools can receive payments for excess renewable energy?
Hertfordshire County Council’s Property teams have recently put together a guidance note on how schools within Hertfordshire can obtain payments for the excess renewable energy that they produce. Through a contract known as a “Smart Export Guarantee” (or SEG) Agreement, schools can agree a tariff rate with energy providers that will enable automatic payments for the energy that is sent back to the national grid.
This guidance is now available on the Grid and includes an introduction to what these agreements are and how they work, as well as a comprehensive overview of the process that schools will need to go through – complete with supporting flowchart.
The guidance is concluded with a frequently asked questions (FAQs) section, which will continue to be updated as additional common queries are received.
For sites currently benefitting from renewable power systems (e.g. solar panels or wind turbines) consider exploring whether a SEG agreement would benefit the school today.
