About Food - a fact of life - Food A Fact Of Life (resources produced and managed by British Nutrition Foundation, in partnership with the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB for pupils aged 3-16 years).

Science through the context of food

Food – a fact of life has produced a range of teaching materials designed to enhance KS3 science education through the context of food.

Many of these materials were developed as part of a project in collaboration with The Royal Society of Chemistry, aimed at sparking interest in chemistry among pupils aged 11-14 and encouraging them to pursue it further.

These teaching materials can enhance your current curriculum or be used in extra-curricular activities, such as drop-down days or STEM clubs.

Ideal for food and nutrition teachers and science teachers. The individual packs provide information and stimulus for the pupils about a particular scientific principle and then more detailed support for teachers and resources to use in the classroom.

The website includes Schemes of Work with detailed lesson plans and links to key resources and activities around the areas of Healthy Eating, Nutritional Analysis, Cooking, Food Commodities and Where Food Comes From.

Practical Food Skills Videos for Pupils

Food a fact of life has launched some newly updated practical food skills videos.

The Practical food skills videos are designed to show pupils how to safely and hygienically carry out different key food preparation techniques.

The videos:

  • are clear and concise
  • demonstrate the key aspects of different food skills
  • end with a bulleted summary of what has been shown
  • are carried out by pupils, to provide 'relatability' for young people.
