Support for assessment of Early Learning and Development

Last updated on 09 September 2026

Schools and early years settings may use a range of assessment tools to monitor children's learning and development and identify emerging needs.

These may include the DfE Early Years SEND Assessment Guidance and Tool, the Council for Disabled Children's Early Years Developmental Journal, the EYFS Profile, Development Matters, VSEND and Hertfordshire's Identification of Additional Educational Needs in Early Years (IAELD).

Used alongside observations, parental contributions, and everyday interactions, these tools help practitioners build a comprehensive understanding of a child's strengths and needs and plan appropriate support and next steps.
