Free access to online newspapers and online magazines

Are you a pupil/student, teacher or school librarian looking for information? As an individual member of the Hertfordshire Library Service you are entitled to free access to our online newspaper and magazine service which are great for providing information for learning as well as reading for pleasure. Some of the topics you may wish to search for include Business News, IT and Technology, Science, Social Care and Health, Politics, Fashion, Art, History, Cookery to name but a few.

Online newspapers

Daily papers can be accessed as well as a range of magazines for leisure and news via a service called Press Reader. This provides access to over 7000 UK and international digital newspapers and magazines, including instant translation in up to 18 different languages for most articles. Some examples of useful publications include the Guardian newspaper which has regular columns on National News, World News, Financial News and Sport. There is a magazine called “Car Mechanics” available for anyone studying motor mechanics, “Mother and Baby” magazine for childcare students or “BBC Good Food” for Food Technology.

The papers can be read via your browser or downloaded to read on your device, a tablet or smartphone via the Press Reader App or you can access them via the library website - and read through your browser:

There are many useful magazines in subject areas with titles available such as History, Newsweek, Popular Science, The Economist and Computer Active to name but a few. Top tips for searching? When searching for a magazine in RDigital, why not search under genre to retrieve eg: all of the available magazines on Computing.Please do take advantage of these useful resources, if you need help with either one of these then library staff will be able to give you a hand.
