Last updated on 19 May 2023

The following educational programmes have been tailored specifically to each year group and are delivered, free of charge, by a Hertfordshire County Council, Sustainable Travel Officer (STO).

Please be aware that whilst programmes for Reception and Years 1, 3 & 6 are classroom based, they will be delivered by a Sustainable Travel Officer via video call.

If you are interested in booking these programmes, then this would involve having an initial travel plan discussion with the STO for your school who will help you sign up to the Modeshift STARS on-line travel plan scheme:

Modeshift STARS – National Accreditation Scheme

Reception class

Stay safe with Aya and Harry – travelling by car

15 minutes classroom based

This story introduces young students to travelling safely in the car. Covering safer choices like entering the car from the pavement side and the importance of wearing a seatbelt. Our family are excited as they take a journey when suddenly something unexpected happens. The family get a shock and realise the consequences of what could happen if they were not wearing a seatbelt. Our story session is then followed by a short activity that reminds the children that when not in a car they should be holding hands to stay safer when walking.

Year 1 class

Story: Stay with Aya and Harry – visiting the zoo

25-30 minutes classroom based

This delightful story introduces young students to holding hands, wearing bright colours to be seen and the Green Cross Code when walking in the street to help them travel as safe as possible. How walking reduces car use, is good exercise and a healthy choice. Our family are excited as they take a journey to the zoo. Our story session is then followed by a short activity that reinforces key messages and includes an action song.

Year 2 class: scooter training

15 students per session

45 minutes playground based

Scootering is a healthy, sustainable, fun way for young children to travel. During this training session, students will learn how to check their scooters safety and to stop correctly. Students will be introduced to the Green Cross Code, remembering to get off and walk their scooter across roads, with adult supervision. They will practice balance and manoeuvring skills, discuss the consideration of other people, learn how to recognise hazards and take measures to stay safer when scootering in the street.

Year 3 class: safer crossing places

45-50 minutes classroom based

This session considers the advantages of walking for exercise, our health, well-being and air quality. The session introduces students to ‘Safer Crossing Places’ and how to keep as safe as possible crossing a road using these crossings. They then discuss what they need to do if crossing at their given crossing and what hazards they need to consider.

Year 4 class: practical pedestrian skills

10 students per group x 3

90-120 minutes to complete each class

This is a practical pedestrian training session, introducing students to the street environment on and around their school. Officers will work with small groups of students on a planned route. They will discuss safe and sustainable travel, air quality, the road layout, safer crossing choices, and hazards and build skills that will help them to travel independently in the future. Officers will work with a member of the school staff and one other adult to support this activity.

Year 5 class: distractions

80 minutes classroom based

Students will have an opportunity to think about safe and sustainable travel options as they move towards independent travel. During this programme, students will get an understanding of just how being distracted including by mobile phones can lead them to be in danger from traffic in a street environment. Through a number of activities students will look at why young people are more likely to be involved in a road traffic collision. Who would be affected if they were injured and what safer behaviour options there are in order to keep themselves safer in the future.

Year 6 class: street engineering quiz

45 minutes classroom based

An online quiz to engage, discuss and build skill knowledge as students prepare for travelling to Secondary school by making safer and healthy choices. Questions include the design of the street environment by highway engineers, with regards safety measures like pedestrian crossings, air quality, how speed impacts on collision severity and sustainable travel choices.
