Admission process for Year 7 pupils at secondary transfer
Important up-date for all secondary schools
As from September 2023, there will be a change in how schools will be expected to manage Year 7 secondary transfer admissions. The “DfE Working together to improve School Attendance Guidance – September 2022” is clear that all schools are expected to accurately complete admission and attendance registers and have effective day to day processes in place to follow up absence. Legal advice has confirmed the previous practise of schools not registering a pupil until the pupil has ‘stepped over the threshold’ is no longer appropriate.
Therefore, to safeguard and ensure children are not ‘lost within unnecessary processes’ all schools must enter pupils on the admission and attendance registers from the beginning of the first day that the pupil is expected to attend the school.
