Elective home education
Elective Home Education (EHE)
Elective home education is a term used to describe a choice and decision by parents to provide education for their children at home or in some other way which they choose, instead of sending them to school. This is different to education provided by a local authority otherwise than at a school - for example, tuition for children who are too ill to attend school.

Removing a child from roll for Elective Home Education (EHE)
If a parent is considering EHE but a final decision hasn’t yet been made, we would strongly advise you to arrange a meeting with the parent to ensure that they understand the implications of EHE. They can then make a fully informed decision in the best interest of their child. Please see KCSIE point 180.
Mainstream schools
Once you have received written notification from a parent requesting their child’s name is taken off roll for EHE:
- You must remove them from roll as soon as reasonably practicable (ideally within 24 hours). No backdating of RfRs is permitted ie: the date for removal is not necessarily the last day the child attended, it is the date specified by the parent or the date the written notification was received.
- Send the RfR form and parent letter to us as soon as possible.
- Please follow the EHE RfR Checklist below as a guide.
Special schools
Once you have received written notification from a parent stating that they would like to EHE, please:
- Arrange a meeting with the parent as mentioned above .
- Notify the EHCCO and the EHE team as soon as possible.
- Carry out an EHCP review.
- The child must remain on roll until consent is given by the LA. The child should continue to attend, and your usual attendance procedure should be followed for any non-attendance.
