Pupils should know:

  • key facts about puberty and the changing adolescent body, particularly from age 9 through to age 11, including physical and emotional changes.
  • about menstrual wellbeing including the key facts about the menstrual cycle.

Puberty

BBC: Operation ouch - how babies are made, puberty. KS2

This clip looks at puberty and why it happens, defining it as changing from a child to a reproductive adult. There is a description of the changes that happen in most bodies, what that may mean for female bodies and male bodies, when it might happen and that it is normal.

PSHE Association: City to sea. Rethink periods

Help pupils explore the full range of menstrual products available and the impact of product disposal on the environment. Consider different cultural myths, taboos and celebrations around menstruation, and how menstruation affects different groups of people.

FPA: Growing up with Yasmine and Tom

Growing up with Yasmine and Tom includes a series of flexible, age-appropriate lesson plans and, interactive whiteboard activities for children aged 5–11. It covers topics including the body, relationships, families, friendship, online and offline safety, and puberty.

Teacher training

DfE: Teacher training: changing adolescent body 

This training module supports the physical health and mental wellbeing section of the statutory relationships, sex and health education curriculum.

The module contains key knowledge and facts to help teachers understand what they must teach. It includes information on the physical and emotional changes in puberty, including menstrual wellbeing.

Every care has been taken to ensure the information and any recommendations in the toolkit are accurate at the time of publishing. Schools must make their own judgements when using these resources and always risk assess with their pupils in mind.
