Guidance on talking about racism with children

Parents and carers play a vital role in helping their children and young people understand race, racism and its impact. Many people find these conversations difficult or are concerned about how to handle questions.

You can use any of the guides below to support you and your family.

HfL also suggest Pragyya Agarwal’s book ‘Wish We Knew What to Say: Talking with Children About Race’ as she includes questions, anecdotes and advice.

If you are looking for a book that you can share with KS1 and KS2 children, you might wish to read ‘Your Skin My Skin: Let's Talk about Race, Racism and Empowerment’ by Laura Henry-Allain.
